Discover / Define
Ensemble Arts Philly is a performing arts organization that brings together the Kimmel Cultural Campus and The Philadelphia Orchestra under one brand. It presents a wide range of programs like Broadway, comedy, theater, jazz, dance, and family shows across the Kimmel Center, the Academy of Music, and the Miller Theater.
They are committed to an inclusive, diverse, and accessible environment. Their IDEAS mission (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) guides their performances, education programs, and daily work. Through arts education and partnerships, they build strong community connections and use the arts to inspire and bring people together in Philadelphia and beyond.
Identity / Deliver
Theme of Connection:
The idea of people coming together during a difficult time and finding unity despite their differences can be a strong design idea. The visuals could use rainbow colors to show how people from many places were connected and came together as one community. The energy of the performance could be mirrored in visuals by dynamic, flowing patterns. This could translate into a visual language where elements are in motion, evoking the urgency and the sudden nature of the event, but also the relief and camaraderie that followed.
Design Process
Typography
Museo Sans:
Museo Sans works well for Ensemble Arts Philly because it is modern, warm, and flexible in many uses. Its modern design makes the brand feel accessible and inclusive, while its wide range of weights allows typography to express musical dynamics and movement. It balances classical vibes and contemporary energy, making it suitable across performances, print, digital, and motion.
Color Palette
The performance begins with dark colors to show tension and hopelessness, then slowly changes into a bright rainbow gradient to represent warmth, connection, and hope. Each color symbolizes a different part of the experience: orange (#F05024) represents energy and excitement, yellow (#FED215) represents comedy and joy, green (#1D9E49) represents community and harmony, blue (#2150A0) represents education and knowledge, purple (#864A9D) represents dance and movement, and pink (#DF3995) represents music and passion.
Brand Logos
Pianists usually face to the right of the audience because the grand piano is designed to project sound in that direction. The piano lid opens outward, helping the music travel more clearly toward the audience like a natural speaker. This position also gives the audience a better view of the pianist’s hands, movements, and facial expressions, making the performance feel more engaging and emotional. In orchestral performances, facing this direction also helps the pianist and conductor maintain eye contact for smoother coordination and timing.
The rainbow gradient represents an open and inclusive space, defining an audience from everywhere. It acts as an open door, welcoming everyone regardless of background, and reinforces the idea of connection, unity, and shared experience.
